Book Review: Unbroken

It was a stormy, rainy night when we met for book club this month. We had a lot of catching up to do since we had not gotten together since July.  Most of us have children in the same grades and were comparing notes on teachers, classes, teams and homework (already!) Kari, our hostess, wanted to make the pizzas Lisa made for the blog post Girls night gets its grill on, so Lisa very nicely stood out in the pouring rain grilling the dough earlier in the afternoon.  Dinner was delicious, full of lively conversation and was not the only part of my Girls Grill Night menu that was duplicated that evening!  Coincidentally, Linda brought out the most scrumptious brownies and vanilla ice cream…almost the exact same dessert I made for my grillin’ girls post! While we ate the sinful dessert, we discussed this month’s book.
Ridgely Brode reviews the book Unbroken by Laura Hilenbrand on her blog Ridgely's Radar.
It was unanimous, we all loved this true story!  Our meeting was one of our most animated and interesting to date.  We have read many books about World War II, but none about the Army Air Forces in the Pacific and the Prisoners of War held in Japan. We were all fascinated to learn about another piece of history. The book recounts the life of Louie Zamperini from childhood in Torrance, California, to his amazing running career that took him to the Olympics, to being a bombadier in the Army Air Force and living for 47 days on a life raft with two other men after being shot down over the pacific by Japanese fighter planes.  You will have to read the book to find out what happens next…I do not want to give too much away.
