It has been a few months since I last posted about our Book Club. I was on vacation for our July get together and we do not meet in August. So, it was really fun to see my friends last week. Terri hosted the group on a very humid, windy and then stormy evening as the remains of Isaac came through the North-East. We had so much catching up to do that I felt like I could not spend enough time with each person to get caught up! We had a delicious Chicken Pot Pie with a green salad for dinner followed by a Mocha Chocolate Icebox Cake that Lisa made.
We were so busy chatting, eating, laughing and sharing our Summer tales that we almost missed our book discussion. For September we read The Unfinished Work of Elizabeth D.: A Novel by Nichole Bernier.
The book is about two friends, Kate and Elizabeth, who meet through their childrens’ playgroup. When Elizabeth dies suddenly in a plane crash, Kate becomes the guardian of Elizabeth’s journals. Kate has to decide what to do with the journals and spends her summer, while vacationing on Great Rock Island, reading them. Kate becomes mesmerized by how little she actually knew Elizabeth as she reads about her family, childhood and early marriage life. So much so, Kate becomes obsessed with the journals. I, too, became engrossed and could not put the book down. We unanimously loved the book and it made for a very thoughtful and interesting book discussion. It made us wonder how well we know each other and how well we share ourselves with others. Here is my review:
