This month we met at Kari’s house for Book Club. As usual we gathered around the appetizers and caught up on the last months activities. Just before we were going in to dinner Claudia burst from the side room waving and talking about this months book. Turns out she had been hiding in there reading the last 10 pages! A flurry of conversation started about the book but since not everyone was present we decided to wait until after dinner to finish the discussion. When we did get to the book review it was a lengthy and interesting exchange.
For October we read Defending Jacob: A Novel by William Landay
The story centers around the Barber family; Andy Barber, the father and local District Attorney of a small Massachusetts town, his wife Laurie and their son Jacob. When a classmate of Jacob’s is killed, Andy Barber takes on the case until his own son is implicated in the murder. Andy chronicles the events as he tries to prove his sons innocence and keep his family together through the developments that follow. The family is ostracized from the community and practically held captive in their own home. During the entire process Andy in unwavering in his support of his sons innocence. As we go through the highly publicized courtroom trial and hear the evidence we are not so sure. It is a gripping and dramatic page-turner! Here is my review:
