December 2012 Book Club

December Book Club is always one of my favorites nights because everyone shows up and we do a Yankee Swap (who doesn’t love a gift exchange?!?!)  This year we met at Linda’s house, which was decorated with the most beautiful (and largest!) tree I have ever seen!  I really should have taken a picture, but luckily for us, when Linda’s family found and cut down their tree at the Jones Family Farm,  they were photographed and then featured on CTPost.com. It was truly a family affair to get the tree home and in the house!  We put our presents under the tree and gathered for drinks and appetizers.  I know you want to know about the food (which was delicious), but I really was more excited about the book discussion and the gifts.

For December we read What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty (check out my reviews of her other titles Big Little Lie’s and Husband’s Secret)

What Alice Forgot | Liane Moriarty

I thought I was going to read a book about alzheimer’s, but it was actually a story about a woman, Alice, who hits her head in a spinning class and loses her memory. She wakes up from her injury thinking it is ten year earlier, that she is 29 years old, a non-exerciser and pregnant with her first child.  When in actuality she is 39 years old, an health/exercise nut, with three children and getting a very contentious divorce.  We follow Alice as she slowly comes to terms with her unknown “older” self and her memories slowly return.  There are some twists and mysteries that keep the book fresh and intriguing.  Our book club really enjoyed it and we all felt that it gave us an interesting perspective on our own lives.  It makes you think about how you have changed and grown, or not, in the past 10 years and are you happy with who you have become or not?  A very good Book Club book,  I say:

We had a very lively and interesting book discussion, but what really mattered was getting to our gift exchange, where everyone brought something $25 and under.  We had a fun time watching each other open presents or “steal” from each other.  I was very lucky and got a beautiful pair of chandelier drop earrings!  I was not able to get a picture and link for every present we exchanged, so I have compiled a similar group of $25 and under presents so that you can see all the fabulous things we found in the price range:

1. The Limited Pop of Color Necklace  /  2. Barefoot Contessa Foolproof: Recipes You Can Trust  /  3. Carolee Champagne Toast Double Drop  /  4. Echo Soft Mosaic Fingerless Gloves  /  5. David Young Chunky Knit Infinity Scarf  /  6. LeSportsac Travel Cosmetic Case  /  7. Owl Measuring Cups  /  8. Butter Sparkle Sparkle Holiday Lacquer Collection  /  9. Tinley Road Woven Cuff  /  10. Tinley Road Multi Chain Necklace  /  11. Amazon.com Gift Cards
