Where has June gone? Just as I was settling in for Summer, July seems to have crept up on me. Can you believe Monday is July 1st? And to think I have already celebrated the 4th of July?!? (a little inside joke for all of you who read my blog regularly!) I almost thought we might not be able to have our Book Club this month with so many of our members celebrating school year end moving-ups, graduations and sporting events, but we snuck it in at the last moment possible. Christine hosted us this month and it was a perfect evening. We enjoyed cool drinks outside before a dinner of make-your-own salads and ended with a refreshing dessert of sorbets and chocolate praline cookies. After our meal we discussed our book.
For June we read The Lost Wife by Alyson Richman
The first chapter is the couple, Lenka and Josef, reuniting after 60 years, lost from each other. The rest of the book is each of them telling their own story, chapter by chapter, from when they were parted, shortly after their wedding, in 1939, to present time. Josef, only able to secure papers for Lenka and not her family, goes to America with his family and Lenka, her conscience making her unable to leave her family to be with her husband, stays with her parents and sister in war ravaged Czechoslovakia as the Nazi Germans take over. Their lives are forever marked by their love for one another and loss they carry from being separated. It is a great book and I highly recommend it.
Are you reading anything good? Please leave a comment with your book suggestions, I would love to hear from you (and so would my book club!)
