I know so many people who have sound machines for their babies and themselves. When our sons were babies, we wanted them to learn to sleep in all kinds of situations and sounds. I did not want them to have to rely on a certain noise to be able to get to sleep. My husband and I stood firm and we did not succumb to having one in our house…until now. I do not recall what made us finally take the plunge, but we got a sound machine for one of our sons for Christmas. I have to tell you, I am a convert! I like to lie with our sons at bed time, talk about their days and scratch their backs for a bit before I say good night. The first night we tried out the sound machine, we set it to the sound of rain and to automatically turn off after 30 minutes. The next thing I knew, I woke up several hours later in my sons bed! This happened a few other nights too! The sound is so soothing and hypnotic that you forget all your thoughts and drift to sleep. He does not use it every night, just whenever he is in the mood for a little storm or rain. I am glad it has not become a constant sleep aid, because I can see how much you could rely on it to get to sleep and I would end up sleeping in his bed more nights than not!
We have the Tranquil Moments Sleep Sound. It is easy to use, with 12 sounds to chose from and an automatic shut off with several time limits to choose from. My two complaints are that it has a very bright light that shines when it is on and it takes up a big piece of real estate on his bedside table.
I am thinking about getting the Travel Sleep Sound Machine for the nights my mind is racing and I need a distraction to get to sleep. I like that is has a dual-time alarm clock, 17 sounds, is small enough to fit on my tiny bedside table and we could use it when we travel to minimize any unfamiliar noises.
There are a few more items that I think make for a good nights sleep and a happy house. If I was a good wife, I would get this pillow speaker so I would not bother my husband at night if I wanted to listen to the sound machine (if I end up purchasing it!) and in the morning when he does not want my alarm to wake him up.
I have this Leontine Linen eye mask which is perfect for afternoon naps and when my husband stays up late reading!
The ultimate luxury on a freezing night is getting into a warm bed! I cannot tell you how nice it is to have a heated mattress pad… it is such a treat! The king size comes with a temperature control for each side of the bed, a very good feature for couples who have different heating needs. I put my side on about an hour before I get in bed and then switch it off when I get in bed.
