The recipe calls for a fair amount of ingredients that are not kitchen staples but, they are all very easy to find in the Asian section of the super market. I was astonished to find every single jar product in my kitchen, plus the onion and garlic! All I had to buy at the store was 6 pounds of English short ribs and fresh ginger.
It is a very easy recipe and took about half an hour to prepare. I placed the meat on a broiler pan and seasoned both sides with salt, pepper and the five-spice powder. I then broiled the ribs for about 6 to 8 minutes per side.
While the meat was cooking, I poured all the wet ingredients, along with the diced onion, ginger and garlic into the slow cooker.
Here is a look at the ribs when they were finished cooking.
I placed the short ribs, little by little, into the slow cooker and coated them in the sauce. I covered the slow cooker and cooked on low for 6 hours.
Once the ribs were finished, the bones lifted away from the meat and I pulled them out of the pot. Instead of the salad suggested in the recipe, I made a traditional cole slaw to pair with the short ribs.
Um, OK, yum. That looks delicious and the fact that I am sitting here with my stomach growling looking at your blog instead of making dinner is not helping.
Yum, yum! With the Chinese New Year coming up, I’m going to give these a try! (Great photos, BTW!)
