This month I hosted our book club. Luckily, it was a small group because my dining room was out of commission due to a ceiling leak and if we had 100% attendance I was not going to fit everyone around my kitchen table. I think I scared off some members when I told them dinner would be something easy to eat off their lap because we ended up being six! Not knowing the final head count, I planned hot ham and cheese sandwiches with a broccoli salad. Not the most gourmet offering but it did the trick and I was not slaving away at my stove. It was a cold night and it was fun to be cozy and casual around my kitchen table. As usual, we chatted up during appetizers and dinner, when we got to dessert, delicious black and white cookies, we discussed the book. For November we read The Last Runaway: A Novel by Tracy Chevalier.
We had all read Tracy Chevalier’s book Girl With a Pearl Earring and loved it, so we welcomed another one of her books. The book drew me in immediately and I really wanted to see where the story would go. Set in 1850, it is about Honor Bright, a Quaker from England, who travels with her engaged sister to meet her betrothed in Ohio. Soon after arriving to America, Honor’s sister dies and Honor is left to travel on to meet her sisters finance. What happens next and how Honor adapts to her new life is the bulk of the story. I found it to get a little tedious at times, but I really wanted her to survive and be happy in her new life. I would say it was a 4 out of 5 stars for me and the group had mixed reviews. It was not a runaway hit (no pun intended) with the group but an easy, interesting book.
