One of my favorite nights of the Holiday Season is our book club. Everyone is in a festive mood and excited to get together, not necessarily for the book discussion but definitely for the Yankee present swap! I am not sure how I did it, but I was able to read the club book and then another one this month. I think it has to do with the fact that I enjoyed both of them so much that I couldn’t put them down! For our December meeting we read The House Girl: A Novel by Tara Conklin.
The story goes back and forth between two main characters: Josephine, a slave in 1852 Virginia and Lina Sparrow, a young lawyer in 2004 New York. It is really interesting to see how their lives intersect and relate to each other as the story unfolds. Everyone in our group loved The House Girl: A Novel and it turned out to be a really good discussion,..
The second book I read was Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cherly Strayed. I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie that Reese Witherspoon produced and acts in. I am curious to see how she portrays Cheryl Strayed and adapts the book to the film.
I do not think I could do a solo 1,100 hike and was curious to read what inspired her to take the challenge and what her experience was like. I liked how she wove personal, poignant stories within and around the challenges of hiking and living in the wild. I loved the book and am looking forward to seeing the movie.
