I just finished reading, Kitchens of the Great Midwest, for the second time. Not because it is “my most favorite book in the world” and wanted to read it again, but because I found a draft of my review in here and wanted to jog my memory so I could publish my review. Has that ever happened to you? You can’t remember the story of a book you read awhile ago?
I really, really liked the Kitchens of the Great Midwest (yes, both times I read it) and I had the same problem the first time I read it as I did this time, I had to keep close attention to the characters names and who they were because they pop back into the story later on. It is a really thoughtful and interesting book about Eva, from her birth, through her teens and then finally ending in her twenties, from the point of view and voice of all the other characters in her life. In some chapters, she is the main character and, in others, she is in the background. That’s the confusing part and where you need to stay focused because, while it seems like the story line took a random path, it all comes back around and makes sense in the end.
Lots of twists and turns!
It is about family, friends, hardship, living in the Midwest and, as the title suggests, lots of food. Have you read it, or if you do read it , I would be curious to hear your thoughts.
