For our January Book Club we read My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout. I did not like it at all. I could not understand where she was going with the story, what the premise was, and/ or what the point of the book was. I was so disheartened because the reviews were great and I really enjoyed Olive Kitteridge (our book club read it way before I started this blog and, therefore, there is no review for me to go back and refresh my memory!). Turns out I was not alone with my disappointment, as the others who read it in my group did not like it either. If you read it and loved it, or not, please let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I am curious why it has gotten such rave reviews when I clearly missed the boat.

I hated the book. The ending was awful. Lucy Barton wasn’t even a likeable person. I kept thinking when is this going to turn into the great book everyone keeps telling me about. The only upside is the hardcover is a pretty shade of blue that works in my decorating scheme.
Love that! It is a very pretty book and goes well in my bedroom as well 🙂 xxRidgely
I did not like Lucy Barton at all either– put it down and did not even finish it which i never do!
Hi Wendy – I finished it, had to see it to the end. You were smart to abort when you did! xxRidgely
I did not like the book at all – it was chapters of rambling events that never lead anywhere.
I agree – Rambling is a good way to describe it.. I can’t even remember how it ended at this point, except that I was disappointed. Thank you for your comments! xxRidgely
I loved it – perhaps the best book I read in 2016. But, I’m a huge Strout fan. I love her prose.
With Lucy Barton, it was a seemingly simple story, but was a portal into the deeply disturbing a complex relationship between a mother and daughter, and a very dysfunctional family.
That is so interesting and I love getting another perspective. Thank you for sharing and giving us your insight! I agree it was a very dysfunctional family and I am sorry it didn’t resonate with me as it did you. xxRidgely
Hated it too…totally don’t get the Hubbub at it.
