Hot of the presses! I just finished The Mother-In-Law: A Novel by Sally Hepworth. I have been wanting to read it since I read the synopsis and posted about it here. If you haven’t read it, it is about Lucy, the Daughter-in-Law, and her Mother-in-Law, Diana.
The book starts out in present times with Lucy and her husband, Ollie, at home making dinner when the police arrive to inform them that his mother has died.. and her death looks suspicious. Lucy narrates the book first and takes us back 10 years to when she met Diana, her Mother-in-Law, for the first time. She is desperate to have Diana like her and for them to become friends, but it doesn’t go as well as she hopes. Then we get to hear how Diana feels about meeting Lucy and her impressions of her sons girlfriend.. soon to be Fiancé.
Can you imagine what your Mother-in-Law thought of you when she first met you?? Hopefully, she didn’t think you were just fine..
We move through their intertwined lives as they each narrate their past and present. We see events through each of their eyes as we try to discover how Diana died. Add in the rest of the family dynamics and personalities makes for a real page turner.
I really enjoyed it and was fascinated by their relationship and how it evolved over time. It is part mystery, part family drama with some cringe moments.. and I am so glad I read it! It was one of those books, I had no idea what I was getting into and it kept my interest. You have got to read it..
Next up, I am reading The Golden Hour and the Whisper Network. I’ll let you know what I think!
in the mean time – Happy Reading! and as always, please leave a comment if you have a review or a book you enjoyed.
